Introduction: The Sorcerer in a Dream.. Symbol of Tribulation and Deliverance
Seeing sorcerers and witches in a dream is among the visions that evoke deep anxiety and dread in the beholder, due to the mental images associated with them, charged with mystery, danger, and cunning. In the traditional world of dream interpretation, this vision is not viewed superficially; rather, it is considered a mirror reflecting the human soul's conditions and its internal and external conflicts. It is a complex vision that may carry a warning of a plotted tribulation, an alert about a hidden enemy, or, at other times, a good omen of salvation from imminent evil or deliverance from great distress. The details of the dream, from seeing the sorcerer himself to escaping from him, are what draw the map of interpretation and reveal the hidden message directed to the dreamer.
Summary of Dreaming About Sorcerers, Witches, and Escaping Them - Is it a Good Omen or a Warning?
Many believe that seeing a sorcerer in a dream merely signifies magic and envy, but Ibn Sirin and Al-Nabulsi reveal deeper connotations related to tribulation, deception, and even sudden deliverance. The precise interpretation depends on what the sorcerer did and what you did in the vision, details that will completely change your understanding.

General Interpretation of Seeing Sorcerers and Witches in a Dream
Major interpreters agree that seeing a sorcerer in a dream primarily symbolizes a deceitful, cunning person who tempts people and creates division among them with falsehoods and lies. However, the precise meaning varies depending on the context and specific details of the vision.
The View of Imam Ibn Sirin
Imam Muhammad Ibn Sirin, in his book "Muntakhab al-Kalam fi Tafsir al-Ahlam" (Selected Discourses on Dream Interpretation), states that a sorcerer in a dream represents a seductive, lying man who seeks to corrupt people's relationships. His appearance in a dream does not bode well; it indicates the presence of a person in the dreamer's life characterized by hypocrisy and cunning, who outwardly displays good but conceals evil. Ibn Sirin emphasizes that the strength of the sorcerer in the dream reflects the extent of the real-life tribulation or enmity. If the sorcerer is strong and harmful, it signifies the severity of the danger threatening the dreamer. As for seeing magic itself, it points to falsehood, delusion, and the temptation into which people fall.
The View of Sheikh Abd al-Ghani al-Nabulsi
Sheikh Al-Nabulsi, in his encyclopedia "Ta'tir al-Anam fi Ta'bir al-Manam" (Perfuming Humanity with Dream Interpretation), adds other dimensions to the interpretation. He agrees with Ibn Sirin that the sorcerer symbolizes a seductive man, but he also connects magic with disbelief (kufr) and separation between a person and their spouse, citing a noble Quranic verse. Al-Nabulsi believes that seeing a sorcerer may indicate someone trying to entice the dreamer into sins and transgressions through false temptations. Furthermore, seeing a gathering of sorcerers in a place may suggest a congregation of people of falsehood and corruption planning a plot or spreading discord in that location.
The View of Imam Ibn Shahin al-Zahiri
Ibn Shahin elaborates in his book "Al-Isharat fi Ilm al-Ibarat" (Pointers in the Science of Expressions) and offers an interpretation focusing on direct enmity. Ibn Shahin considers a sorcerer to be an overt enemy seeking to harm the dreamer by all means. If a person sees a sorcerer casting magic upon them, this is a warning of someone secretly plotting against them. Ibn Shahin believes that the harm of magic in a dream corresponds to the extent of what was seen in the dream, and escaping it in the dream signifies deliverance from the schemes of enemies in wakefulness.
Positive Interpretation: Escaping the Sorcerer as a Symbol of Deliverance and Victory
Contrary to what it might seem, this vision can be very positive and auspicious, especially if it includes the element of escape or triumph over the sorcerer.
Ibn Sirin's Interpretation of Deliverance
Ibn Sirin states that escaping a sorcerer in a dream is one of the best things a dreamer can see in this context. Escape symbolizes deliverance from tribulation, salvation from a cunning enemy's plot, and moving away from people of falsehood. Whoever sees himself chasing a sorcerer until he flees, will expose the deceit of a cunning person and triumph over him. Killing a sorcerer in a dream, according to Ibn Sirin, is a complete victory over falsehood and the nullification of a great plot that was being hatched against the dreamer.
Al-Nabulsi's Interpretation of Triumph
Al-Nabulsi interprets escaping a sorcerer as an indication of the dreamer's strong faith and adherence to truth, which makes them immune to temptations and tribulations. He also believes that seeing magic being nullified or the dreamer not being affected by it indicates the wisdom and insight they possess, enabling them to uncover deceit and deceivers. It is a vision that signifies a return to righteousness and repentance from a sin the dreamer was on the verge of committing.
Ibn Shahin's Interpretation of Victory
Ibn Shahin asserts that escaping a sorcerer literally means deliverance from the evil of an enemy. So, whoever was in dispute or concerned about someone and saw themselves escaping a sorcerer, it is good news that this enmity will end in their favor. And if the dreamer sees themselves reciting the Quran to the sorcerer, who then flees or burns, it indicates that the dreamer will triumph over their enemies by the strength of their faith and their reliance on Allah Almighty.
Negative Interpretation: Seeing a Sorcerer as a Warning of Danger and Tribulation
Conversely, the vision carries strong warning aspects if the dreamer is the defeated party or is affected by the sorcerer's magic.
Ibn Sirin's Warning
Ibn Sirin warns that seeing oneself affected by or following a sorcerer's magic indicates that one might fall into a great tribulation or follow people of falsehood. Seeing a sorcerer inside the dreamer's house may suggest family disputes and problems caused by a slanderous and corrupt person from outside or inside the family. Moreover, learning magic in a dream symbolizes pursuing falsehood and acquiring knowledge that does not benefit but rather harms.
Al-Nabulsi's Warning
Al-Nabulsi believes that succumbing to a sorcerer in a dream may indicate the dreamer's weak faith and ease of being led astray by desires and whims. Whoever sees a sorcerer causing separation between him and his spouse should beware of the words of slanderers and corrupt individuals who seek to spoil his family relationship. Furthermore, seeing tools of magic, such as talismans and knots, indicates hidden schemes and ill secrets being plotted in secret.
Ibn Shahin's Warning
Ibn Shahin goes on to say that seeing a sorcerer succeeding in harming the dreamer portends harm that may befall the dreamer in their wealth, health, or reputation from an enemy. If one sees the sorcerer feeding them or giving them something to drink, this indicates harm befalling them through deception. He believes that seeing a sorcerer with an ugly and repulsive face indicates the hideousness of the enemy's actions and the foulness of their inner self.
Interpretation of Seeing Sorcerers and Escaping Them According to the Dreamer's State
The vision acquires specific and precise meanings based on the dreamer's social and psychological state.
Dream Interpretation for the Single Woman
Seeing a sorcerer in a single woman's dream, according to the three interpreters, often indicates the presence of a deceitful and cunning person in her life, possibly a man attempting to mislead her with false promises and sweet words with the aim of harming her. Escaping the sorcerer in her dream is a great good omen, signifying her deliverance from this bad person and her uncovering of his true nature before he can harm her. However, if she sees herself affected by his magic, it is a call for her to be extremely cautious in her relationships and not to grant her trust easily.
Dream Interpretation for the Married Woman
For a married woman, a sorcerer in a dream symbolizes someone seeking to cause separation between her and her husband, whether it is an envious woman or a slanderous man spreading gossip to stir up problems. Ibn Sirin and Al-Nabulsi agree that this vision is a warning for the woman to avoid revealing her home's secrets and to be mindful of those who enter her life. Escaping the sorcerer or expelling him from her house symbolizes her ability to protect her family, her triumph over those who try to harm her, and the return of stability and harmony to her marital life.
Dream Interpretation for the Pregnant Woman
A pregnant woman's vision of a sorcerer may reflect her fears and anxieties about pregnancy and childbirth, or it may symbolize the presence of envious people in her surroundings who harbor ill intentions towards her. Escaping the sorcerer, as interpreted by the scholars, is a symbol of salvation and safety, and an omen that she will pass through the pregnancy safely, her delivery will be easy, by Allah's will, and both she and her baby will be saved from all harm or envy.
Dream Interpretation for the Divorced Woman
In a divorced woman's dream, a sorcerer may symbolize the injustice she has suffered, or the bad talk and rumors directed at her. It may also represent someone trying to exploit her circumstances. Escaping the sorcerer in her dream is a strong indication of the start of a new phase, her overcoming past pains, and her triumph over those who wronged her. It is a vision that brings good news of deliverance, restoration of good reputation, and the ability to build a new, better life.
Dream Interpretation for the Man
In a man's dream, a sorcerer often represents a dishonest competitor at work, a hypocritical friend, or someone trying to involve him in losing deals or false matters. Ibn Sirin and Ibn Shahin believe that a man escaping a sorcerer means deliverance from a business plot, the exposure of a friend's betrayal, or triumph over his adversaries. If the man is righteous, the vision may be a warning to him about a tribulation in his religion or worldly affairs, and his escape from it is proof of his steadfastness in truth.

Psychological Analysis of Seeing Sorcerers in Dreams
From a modern psychological perspective, seeing a sorcerer symbolizes dark and repressed aspects within the dreamer's own personality (what is known as the "shadow" in Carl Jung's psychology), or it may express the dreamer's feeling of helplessness and being under the influence and control of a manipulative person in their waking life. This person could be an overbearing boss, a toxic partner, or an exploitative friend. Escaping the sorcerer in this context represents the soul's desire to break free from this negative influence, to strive towards regaining control over its decisions and life, and to refuse submission to psychological and emotional manipulation.
Special Cases of Seeing a Sorcerer in a Dream
Some details in the vision add greater depth to the interpretation:
Seeing a Known Sorcerer: Interpreters agree that seeing a person you know in the form of a sorcerer is a clear indication that this person is deceitful and cunning in reality, and caution should be exercised towards them.
Seeing an Unknown Sorcerer: Symbolizes an unexpected enemy or a tribulation that comes from where the dreamer does not anticipate. Escaping him is deliverance from an unknown source of evil.
Seeing a Sorcerer in the House: As mentioned by Ibn Sirin, it is a sign of tribulation or family disputes caused by a close relative or an intruder who spoils the relationship between family members.
Killing a Sorcerer: Ibn Shahin and Al-Nabulsi consider this one of the strongest symbols of victory. It means the complete elimination of the source of tribulation, evil, and enmity, and the beginning of a phase of peace and security.
Transforming into a Sorcerer: An unfavorable vision. Ibn Sirin believes it may indicate that the dreamer himself is following falsehood and tempting people with lies and deceit.
Modern Interpretations of the Vision in Light of Contemporary Reality
Based on the interpretations of the ancient imams, we can link the vision of a sorcerer in modern times to contemporary symbols. Today's sorcerer may not be a literal magician, but rather symbolize: misleading media that tempts people with false news, online scammers who deceive their victims with promises of quick wealth, or negative charismatic figures who attract followers to destructive ideas. Escaping the sorcerer in this context means possessing the awareness and insight to expose this falsehood, being saved from fraud and scams, and freeing oneself from poisonous ideas spreading in society.
Conclusion: The Message of the Vision Between Warning and Good Tidings
In conclusion, the vision of sorcerers and witches and escaping them is a dream with multiple layers of meaning. It is not merely a reflection of fear of the unknown, but a precise message to the soul. It may be an alarm bell urging us to review our relationships, scrutinize those we trust, and fortify ourselves against people of cunning and tribulation. In its most beautiful forms, when crowned with escape or victory, it is a harbinger of salvation, deliverance, and strength of faith, affirming that truth, no matter what falsehood it faces, is the most enduring and powerful.
